If you passed by The UpFront Club during the working week from mid-May, you'd have seen a bustle of activity as the builders carry out the renovations with assistance from staff. Many Club regulars have been having "withdrawal symptoms" with the temporary closure of their favourite venue. Within a week or two of this newsletter being out, the refurbishment should have been completed. In the meantime, members will need to rely on the bush telegraph, the Range News and signs outside the Club and Co-op for an announcement of the Club's opening date and "Club-warming" party. Club and Co-op members will be interested to know that the Board is calling for submissions on whether or not to change the (trading) name of The UpFront Club, and also on a new logo for the Maple Street Co-op which may incorporate elements of both co-ops [Co-op News section for more details]. Maleny locals concerned about surveillance can "relax" in the knowledge that, in May, Qld Police removed the camera and its housing from outside the Woolworths supermarket (presumably we were judged to be no longer a threat). However, our faces have already been videotaped and the recordings no doubt are being kept for posterity. The retailing giant denies using face recognition technology (FRT), but it would say that, wouldn't it? Certain privacy-invading technologies are already being used in Maleny, and FRT is certainly another option on offer. The Maleny anti-Woolworths campaign is still receiving coverage, not just in the mainstream news media [see Lori's "We Still Won't Shop There" story, Environment Features] but also by independent researchers and bloggers who watch the supermarket duopoly. The "I Won't Shop There" logo and comments on the campaign are up on the Greenpeace True Food website (http://www.greenpeace.org.au/truefood/index2.html), while the MalenyVoice.com website is always a good source for updates. On the environment front we've scored a win with Premier Beattie's shelving of the Montville Links development, but we now have another battle over the proposed Mary River dam – see the Co-op's petition board, and stay tuned for news of ongoing protest actions. Catch up with you when the Club re-opens! Ruth [From "Maple Street Co-op News", June/July 2006;
