Another issue, another protest action – or at least a waiting game to hear the results of past ones. As we go to press, a decision on Maleny anti-Woolworths campaigner Joe Colreavy's case has been reserved by the Caloundra Magistrate. The prosecution and defence cases are presenting different versions of events regarding Joe's alleged assault of a policeman with his horse on 14 July last year. At this stage, who knows – maybe the horse will win... Joe has received lots of support, with many fellow campaigners attending the court hearings. Hope you appreciate the coverage of the Woodford Folk Festival's Fire Event by Mary Meadows this issue. The event's director, local identity Paul Lawler, oversaw a tour de force with the creative input of over 140 volunteers plus numerous musicians and Fire Choir members. With a united spirit, they made a stand for our planet – and our local ecosystem. The platypus and shopping trolley creations were especially strong metaphors for Maleny's environmental plight and the ephemeral nature of today's materialistic culture. If you can spare some time, make a submission before 22 February on the fate of the Maleny Palms Caravan Park, a less popular but very important local concern with impacts on elderly members of our community in particular (write to Assessment Manager, CCC, PO Box 117, Caloundra Qld 4551, quoting reference number 2005/56-00018k). Meantime, no word as yet from Premier Beattie re his call-in powers over the proposed Links development in Montville. We live in hope. Until next time... Ruth |
