Great news! The biggest study ever into organic food has
found it's more nutritious than ordinary produce - "Der, tell us something
we don't know", I hear you Co-op members say!
The $27-million, four-year European Union-funded study (see www.bfa.com.au)
found that organic fruit and vegetables contained between 20 and 40
per cent more antioxidants. They also had higher levels of vitamin C,
and minerals such as iron and zinc. The study also showed that organic
milk has 50-80 per cent more nutrients, including more vitamin E, and
organic cheese has twice as many nutrients than conventional varieties.
Based on the study's figures, if you eat four portions of organic fruit
and veg a day, it's the equivalent of eating five portions of non-organic
fruit and veg. So it's official: organic produce has more of what you
do need, and less of what you don't need.
On a less positive note, Caloundra City Council's decision on the Maleny
Community Precinct (see adjoining story ) has angered many. Stay tuned
for developments after the public meeting on 5 December.
The idea of a Co-op member forum was raised at the AGM. Remember, anyone
is welcome to contribute story ideas or articles to the Co-op News,
should they be appropriate and relevant to members. Just leave me a
message or email me at the Co-op, and I'll get back to you to follow
it up.
I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. See you next year!
