It seems the 'powers that be' are at it again, ignoring the majority
of the community's wishes and voting to prepare a draft plan for an
18-hole golf course for the Maleny Community Precinct. What a crazy
idea!
Golf courses are expensive to maintain and they use irresponsible amounts
of precious water and resources. According to experts, the land is unsuitable
for a golf course and rainy old Maleny's climate not conducive to year-round
golfing.
Golf courses and the attached housing developments needed to make them
even partially financially viable, take up a lot of space that could
be used in ways that impact the environment less, and offer benefits
to many more people in the community - not just those who have the spare
cash and enough leisure time to enjoy playing golf.
Read Jon Woodlands' article on pages 6-7 for an alternative plan that
makes a lot more environmental sense. This eco-park would create many
job opportunities and would have much wider community appeal.
You'll notice the Maple Street Co-op News is looking a little
different this issue. We're now using 100 per cent recycled paper. We
haven't used it previously because the quality wasn't up to scratch,
but we've now sourced an excellent recycled stock.
Just a reminder, Co-op membership fees were due on July 1, and after
31 August the 5% discount will not apply to unfinancial members.
Happy trails!
