Nature The Ultimate Muse For Maleny Artists
By Nicole Murray
The UpFront Club shows new art every month, and all Co-op members
and non-members are invited to the monthly opening night, always held
on a Thursday. The opening provides a chance to meet the artist, enjoy,
discuss and purchase the works, and relax in the Club's friendly atmosphere.
Marianne Osborne drew the arts crowd out on a chilly night for the
opening of her exhibition, "Painted Ladies", on 31 May.
The show was a great success, offering patrons a chance to dress up
and toast the array of idiosyncratic portraits with their teapots,
hats, mirrors and personalities.
Following on from Marianne's exhibition was Kathryn Brimblecombe-Fox's
"Mountains and Metaphors", which showed at the Club from
28 June to 31 July.
At her opening night on 28 June, Kathryn discussed the intention of
a number of the works. The ideas ranged from mountain tops as a metaphor
for thinking through different perspectives, the recurrence of symbolic
language across many spiritual cultures, to women in the bush, their
connection with and assimilation into the landscape and their key
role in husbanding the energy of small towns and pioneer settlements.

WENDY NUGENT: "FLYING SOLO"
2 August-28 August
Well-known local arts dynamo, Wendy Nugent, is showing her recent
work at the Club in August.
The lively beauty of her acrylic landscapes is drawn from the Blackall
Range, yet Wendy's work evokes a powerful sense of place rather than
a specific location.
Living and working in Maleny, she says the landscape becomes a constant
dialogue that is ever-present in her painting. Wendy builds up layers
of colour and texture on her canvasses, exploring the relationship
between the land and those who live within it.
Wendy's award-winning paintings have been selling well at recent group
exhibitions, and this is a great opportunity to support her first
solo show. Visit www.malenyarts.com/pages/artist_list.php

HANNAH BRUZOVA:
"PERUSING THE MUSE"
30 August-2 October
Enormous, stylised ladybugs and butterflies are some of the subjects
featured in Hannah Bruzova's powerfully simple artworks. Using strong,
flat areas of colour and a clean-edged drawing style, Hannah's paintings
are informed by her work as a signwriter and her current studies for
a BA in Graphic Design at the Sunshine Coast University. Hannah works
in acrylics on canvas, using a combination of brush work and paint
spatter, favouring bold colours with a semi-Art Nouveau influence.
This is Hannah's second show at the Club. With a new collection of
works created this year, nature, she says, is her ultimate muse.
Coming up in October...
The Maleny Apex Hinterland Youth Artists Competition is on for the
13th year. This heart-warming event has grown considerably and will
be judged by prominent local artists Peter Hudson and Corrie Wright.
The Upfront Club will display the winners and exceptional pieces.
